Buying books
My sister is having a girl--Logyn (like Logan) Jane. I'm starting to think about buying Logyn things, mostly books. I'm going to work on filling a small bookcase with everything from The Cat in the Hat to To Kill a Mockingbird, giving her books to grow into.
So...do you have any suggestions?

Thousands; but I'll just pick two, like you:
Anne of Green Gables and The Catcher In The Rye.
Good luck, Logyn Jane.
winnie the pooh and/or the house at pooh corner (the originals not that disney crap).
still two of my fave books.
I'm going to look at the books of Emily's that I've saved. Some of my favorite gifts that Emily got were books to grow into. I'm not sure about giving books that she'll read in many years to come. Your sister will have to store them. You might want to save them to give later, and be the aunt that always gives books. That will make a great memory for your niece.
Where the Wild Things Are
Anything by Louis Sachar
My girls loved "Hello Moon" tremendously. It is a lovely book to read to them. Also, Seuss's "One Foot, Two Foot," I think it's called. That will get everyone giggling.
the American Girl series, both the historical fiction and the How To guides for coping with growing up.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
"The Diary of a Wimpy Kid"
Maurice Sendak for now.
You can always add A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
And yes, the Harry Potter series....
I'm going to overstay my welcome and also pipe in for the Chronicles of Narnia. Fantastic. And the movie version was kinda weak, so you gotta go for the books.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (All 13 of them)
The Grumpy Ladybug
The Giver
the two I bought recently are Anne of Green Gables and Where the Red Fern Grows...
Goodnight Moon. Peter Rabbit. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Horton Hears a Who. Horton hatches an Egg. Hmmm, there must be more, but someone already suggested Where the Wild Things Are, my all-time favorite.
That is such a cool idea hun.
Agree with all of the above.
I thank you all for your great suggestions!
A bit late little one but I thought of "Charlotte's Web" and Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tales.
Then there's the "Nine Emotional Lives of the Cat" for when she is a bit older.
Logyn Jane is sweet. I have a niece Amy Jane and another niece, Tahlia Grace, then there are Amber and Jasmine. My stepchildren are Jodie, Christopher, Edwina, Jonathan, Henry and Alexandra and our grandchildren: Summer Aeisha and William Oliver Stirling. It is great fun being an auntie and you will enjoy it.
Goodnight Moon and The Stupids (including The Stupids Step Out)...
I am late in the game as well, but my favorites are:
Grimms Fairy Tales. Not the soft and politically correct Disney versions, but the original cautionary tale versions
Lemony Snicket's The Complete Wreck (all 13 books in the set)
The Gas We Pass
Everyone Poops
I try to stick to books that are fun for the whole family.
