Give thanks
I just got off the phone with my dad. He said simply, "Well, we've ordered the wine." By that he means that he ordered my brother, the server, to bring a couple cases. We finally started incorporating alcohol into the holiday last year. My grandparents don't drink. You know, because they go to church instead. But last year, we finally said something to the effect of, "Look, this getting together and pretending like we all like each other bullshit would be a hell of a lot easier if we weren't all so very alert and oriented the whole time." Or at least, that's what we meant. It may have sounded more like, "Have a glass, Grandma. Trust me...Jesus would want you to."
We could probably do the whole thing cheerfully sober if it weren't for those two. You know the ones. They talk and you think, "Do you ever want to strangle you, or can you not actually hear yourself speak?" Yeah, we've got a couple of those. And every year we give thanks that they don't live any closer.
So, tomorrow I will raise my glass, and then tip it upside down over my esophagus until I feel nothing but gratitude.

I'll drink to that. Happy thanksgiving!
We're big on Bloody Mary's and gin and tonic with our group. Hey, it makes if more fun.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving, T. Liv reminded me that we are celebrating the ONE day that they white people were decent to her ancestors and this sort of sobered me. So, I told her that we are changing the rules. Thanksgiving is the day that we are thankful for our families.
She said, "Uncle Tom, too?"
And I just said, "No. Not him. Just everyone else. Well...okay...just your Dad and Bing and you and me, okay?"
She nodded.
Drink up, baby doll.
I'm very thankful that I found you little one. Sadly I can't drink as I'm totally allergic to alcohol. Sometimes I take the chance and have a sip and I'm so envious of those who can rev up on delicious liquids until I see the hangovers the next day, so I tell myself that I need all the brain cells I can hang on to and it's just as well I can't drink.
Happy Thanksgiving, T and "drink up baby doll".
My grandparents don't drink. You know, because they go to church instead. This one made me laugh - this year's famiy gathering included my sister who is a lay member of a religious order, her husband who is priest, and my mother who is a vestry member. And trust me, there has been plenty of drinking going on.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, too!
Hmm. My grandma and I had a glass of wine together on Thursday. She goes to church -and- drinks! I guess it runs in the family :P I hope it was enjoyable for you, at least now you can get silly with the introduction of wine.
I have to tell you I used this line "So, tomorrow I will raise my glass, and then tip it upside down over my esophagus until I feel nothing but gratitude." numerous times this past weekend, but I always gave you the credit.
